Internet = Connection

20 10 2009

In class today, we discussed how Howard Dean said that the internet is used to connect people. This could not be more true. While the internet is an amazing source of information, it is also being used largely for connecting with other people.

Facebook, Twitter, Myspace, blogspot, wordpress, and YouTube! It’s insane how many of these social sites that we all have pages at. On a list of the the most popular/most visited websites of 2009, Youtube is 3rd, Facebook is 5th, Myspace is 9th, WordPress is 24th, Craigslist is 27th, Flickr is 33rd, etc.

There is even certain ‘etiquette’ for social interactions on the internet:

Internet etiquette, or ‘Netiquette,’ (Yes, Netiquette is a real word!) can include but is not limited to the examples about Facebook in the video above. Because communication via internet is often impersonal and not face-to-face, it is easy for one to be misinterpreted. It’s hard to joke around in text messages as well as in chat windows. How can you tell if someone is being sarcastic?

I remember a text that I got from my roommate….”We can’t be roommates anymore..” I was in class when I received this text, and only having known my roomie for a few weeks I had no way of knowing if she was just joking. (Turns out she was kidding – phew! –  it’s now our inside joke.)
